The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) grants an amateur license called the Technician Class to get started in ham radio.  Passing a 35 question test that contains memorization of frequency bands, DOs and DON'Ts, and some technical info is all that's required.  Most people find it easy to do - with some study. Young people (age 9) and older folks (80s) have passed the test at the Radio Club of Tacoma.

More info on getting started in Ham Radio.  A very informative website.  Be sure to check out all the links on this page.

Radio Club of Tacoma offers a "One Weekend  Technician" class for interested people who are serious about getting their first Ham Radio License. The class starts on a Saturday at 9:00 AM - to 5:00 PM and on Sunday at the same times.  RCT provides refreshments (donuts, cookies, coffee, sodas), and some study handouts. RCT charges the student $10.00 to cover costs.
Directions to Radio Club of Tacoma class location.

The latest "Ham Radio License Manual Level 1" book is also required- as the class is taught with the book as a study guide. RCT usually  has books available for $25.00.  Call Steve Morton for book availability.  Click here for more info about the book.

The new ham Technician class is always held the weekend before the second Tuesday of the month.

The Radio Club of Tacoma is also an American Radio Relay League (ARRL) affiliated testing facility. RCT gives amateur radio tests for all classes of ham licenses.  Tests are given at the RCT Clubhouse on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM.  Click HERE for RCT testing details.
