A GMRS license DOES NOT require a test, but you must apply for the license and pay a fee.

You must be at least 18 years old, and not a representative of a foreign government.

The license is $35 and is valid for 10 years .

A single license allows you and your immediate family to operate GMRS radios.

The maximum power output is 50 watts, and you can use repeaters to extend your range!

Follow these steps to get your GMRS license:

Create your FCC CORES account

Go to the FCC CORES site and register to receive your FCC Registration Number (FRN); you’ll provide your name, address, email, and SSN.

Log into the FCC ULS system

Use your new FRN and password to sign into the Universal Licensing System, where all radio-service applications are filed.

Apply for a GMRS license

Choose “Apply for a New License,” select radio service code ZA (GMRS), and complete the short form with your personal information.

Answer eligibility questions

Confirm you are at least 18 and not acting for a foreign government; if you have a felony history, you must provide a brief explanation.

Pay the $35 FCC fee

Submit the application and pay the required fee; once processed, your GMRS call sign is issued and valid for 10 years.

Receive your GMRS call sign

Your official license will appear in ULS in 1 to 3 days, and be emailed to you if you provided an email address.
